Not Only a Mom

Words from a whole person.

A Whole Pair, and a Scarf

I finished them! V now has a complete pair of socks. He tells me he plans to wear them to work today to show them off. We will see.

V's Socks

These are in Paton’s SWS yarn in Natural Navy. I used size 8 bamboo DPN’s. The pattern is The Yarn Harlot’s basic sock recipe.

I learned quite a few things making these socks. One is that I really do love bamboo needles. They are warm and smooth, they don’t fall out of my stitches so easily, and they are so light. A second thing is that it’s a lot easier to work on four DPNs than three, for me at least. It just seems a lot easier with the needles at right angles, they were more out of the way, and I was beginning to overcome the laddering of the stitches that way too. Finally, I learned I’m amazed to hear everyone make such a big deal about grafting, it’s not that difficult when you get the rythum down.

So now I’m dropping down several needle sizes and yarn sizes and starting a pair for TR. Wish me luck!

I also finished a very simple scarf for me.

My Scarf

Just a long skinny rectangle in a stockingette stitch with garter stitch borders. The yarn is Red Heart Rag Doll in Sorbet. The kids got me this yarn for Christmas. I did it on size 13 straights. It’s very soft, really warm, and looks great with my black coat.

So just to keep things interesting, in addition to TR’s socks, I’ve been figuring and planning a cable stitch wrap for me. I’ve seen the long, wide rectangle type wraps around and I really like them. I wanted something light with a nice drape, something interesting to the stitch pattern but not too complicated. Saturday at the yarn store I found this yarn that I like:

Wrap Cotton Yarn

I’ve done three swatches with it, one to get the size right, and two to figure out my pattern. I couldn’t find anything I liked, so I just looked at some basic cable patterns, did a ton of math along with my couple of samples, and I think I know what I’m doing. We will see!

Don’t hold your breath for me to finish soon though, I want it to be really big, and of course I have so many things in the works at once!

  2. […] It’s the same basic pattern as the ones I did previously for V, the Yarn Harlot’s basic sock recipe. These are in something from Knit Picks that doesn’t seem to be available anymore, and of course I lost the ball band again. I did them on US 3 dpn’s. You can see they are not identical; the colors on the striping don’t match because there simply wasn’t enough yarn to cut off at the beginning to match the stripes. I thought about cutting the beginning yarn and moving it to the end to try and match colors, but I didn’t want to mess with getting the length right to get the stripes the same width, and I wasn’t positive it would work, and I thought this way would come out nice anyway (which it did.) I’m glad I took the photos last night, because the socks left the house on TR’s feet this morning. […]
