Not Only a Mom

And Another Snow Day

Every since my kids were born, it seems like V and I have commented year after year that the winters just aren’t the same as they were when we were kids. We can remember snowfall after snowfall, building snomen and snow forts, snow chickens and snow toilets. (Ok, we must have been weird kids.) But in the years of our boys’ lives, we end up with maybe one good snowfall each season, if even that. They are short lived events, and far between.

This year is turning out to be much more like what we remember from our childhoods. There have been several decent snowstorms around here, and last night added one more. We woke up to a good four inches of the white stuff and a day free from school for TR, which earns SW a homeschool day off as well. I might sneak in something educational for the both of them, but I’ll have to be subtle about it.

The main draw back is that the district has used up all it’s built in snow days, so these are going to have to be made up at the end of the year. Too many more and the regular school year is going to bump into the summer school session, where TR has been getting in extra credits. The other draw back is the district’s new phone notification system, which apparently will call parents at any time of the day or night. Our phone rang at 5:15 this morning to let me know the school day was cancelled. I didn’t need that. I’ve always managed to figure it out before, I can do without the middle of the night disturbance.

I don’t think we are going to venture out in it today though. Everyone is getting over colds and the temperatures are falling throughout the day, so we will make it an indoor snow day. Perhaps we will celebrate by baking something; my toes could use the heat.

I might see if I can get TR to keep RM entertained for awhile too, so I can get a little extra housework done, or at least get some of it done faster. It would be nice to have some extra time to knit. I’ll work on his socks, that might motivate him. Here’s where we stand on them so far:

I’d like to work on my wrap too, which so far is not even one entire ball into the five balls I think it’s going to take to finish. It’s the cable rows that slow me down, I’m still horribly awkward at them, but I’m getting there. I also waste a lot of time stopping to admire the work, the yarn and the drape of it over and over. I can’t help being just a little bit impressed with myself, it’s not so long ago that I couldn’t have imagined myself creating such a thing.

The picture doesn’t quite get the scale right, it’s coming out about 22 inches wide, and I’m hoping for about 65-70 inches long, depending on how the yarn comes out. I’m not a small person, so I’m going for a generous size.

Such a shame it’s not done; along with my toes, the rest of me could use the warmth too.

  1. You are just a knitting fool now! ;-)
Wow I like those socks. I have so many ufos that need to be finished so I’m fighting the urge to learn to knit.
