For Two
Saturday, March 3rd, 2007The weather reports are saying that tomorrow the spring like weather comes in to stay for good. I’m taking personal responsibility for bringing on spring since I’ve just finished a couple of cold weather projects. Instead of claiming to be running behind, let’s just say I’m ahead of the game for next year.
I first saw the pattern from Knitty for the Calorimetry on a blog here. I liked the idea of something to keep my ears warm other than a hat. I just don’t do hats, like so many things they give me headaches. I made up one of these in some old acrylic and really liked it; enough that I decided to commit my one decent stash skein of wool to it. Of course, the gauge was completely different with the wool, and I made and completely frogged one before I got this right, but I’m happy with the results now!

I was actually so happy with it, that I scaled the whole thing down and made a matching one for RM.

It’s our first matching mother/daughter anything. When we both have them on, she keeps patting her head, then mine, then hers again. She seems to be quite taken with the idea we have the same thing.

I then got carried away with my creativity and used the remaining yarn to make a very basic pair of fingerless mitts for myself. I was equally impressed with myself over these; they fit great and feel wonderful. My hands get so cold and my tired old tendons get very achy and these things keep them toasty but still let me work.

It would have been perfect to have been able to make some sort of little mitts for RM as well, but it wasn’t to be. When I was done with these three things, all that was left was this:

I miss having this in my stash, but I think it will get much more practical use this way. For the record, the yarn is Cascade, but I lost the label so I can’t tell you the exact one or the colorway. I did the mitts on US8 dpn’s, mainly because that’s what I had; no further purchases required. The Calorimetrys I ended up doing on US7 straights, smaller needles than what the pattern called for because that’s what gave me the right gauge, for my head at least.
Believe it or not, these aren’t the pictures or finished projects that got eaten in the camera to computer transfer the other day. Those are still to come!
