Not Only a Mom

Thoughtful Acts

This morning I had to run to the grocery store to stock us up for the week. This is usually one of my least favorite things to do, but a simple thoughtful act made it so much more pleasant today.

A gentleman was leaving just as I was walking in and going to get a cart. He stopped me and said, “Here, take this cart. It rolls perfectly.” He stopped the cart in front of me, smiled and walked out the door.

He was right. This cart rolled absolutely perfectly. I don’t think I have ever used a grocery cart that moved so smoothly and silently. It made the whole process of shopping so much more pleasant. It really was wonderful.

It was such a simple thing, but as much as the little things can drive me crazy sometimes, so can the little things be such a joy. That man didn’t have to do anything more than park the cart and go on about his business. He had nothing to gain by sharing that simple piece of information with me. Nevertheless he did, and in doing so made my day a little bit brighter. I wish I had the opportunity to thank him a second time.

Having started out so nicely, the day is proceeding in an equally pleasant fashion. The lilacs are starting to bloom out, not at their full beauty yet but already filling the yard with an intoxicating scent. Sitting at my sewing machine by my bedroom window I can breathe their wonderful scent, listen to the distant hum of lawnmowers and the chirp of the birds, and get a little work done. I even, finally, remembered how to get my machine to properly make buttonholes.

I need more days like this.

  1. It sounds like you had a lovely day. I have never tried buttonholes before (my mom always did it) but I have some cute dress patterns so I know who to call if I need help.;-)
