Not Only a Mom

Words from a whole person.

Celebration?

Today is my birthday. I am another year older, and firmly in my 40’s now instead of just barely.

Thank goodness for my Mother. She took the kids and I out last week for lunch and a day at Union Station Kansas City. We had a great time, especially at the Norman Rockwell Exhibit. If you are in the area I highly recommend it. She gave me a wonderful gift and beautiful cards. Last night she bought me the big cookie cake and SW wrote on it for me. My Mom is a tremendously thoughtful person.

V took me to a baseball game last night. It was nice; enjoyable in spite of the home team loss. The heat wave has finally ended so it was just cool enough but not too much so. RM loves people watching, clapping along with the crowds and all the screaming and yelling. SW stayed with my Mom so we actually managed to see the entire game, down to the last out.

But before we give V too much credit for this “gift,” know a couple of things. First, he won the tickets at work, where he enters each and every drawing for baseball tickets. You see, he is a baseball fanatic. He’s barely alive in the days from the end of the World Series until the beginning of Spring Training; wandering around like a lost soul with nothing to do. He runs at least 8 fantasy teams a year. It’s a complete obsession. At one point in the game he points out a player, and says “He’s wearing the same number as (insert name of player I’ve forgotten here), remember?” Of course I didn’t remember. But when he gave me that look, I wanted to say “Quick, tell me if you remember the birthdates of your children!”

So him giving me baseball tickets for my birthday is a little bit like an episode of the Simpsons, where avid bowler Homer gives Marge a bowling ball with his name engraved on it as a gift. Ah well, such is my life.
