Not Only a Mom

Words from a whole person.

Mommy’s Helper

It still continues to amaze me how helpful RM is around the house. She is still so tiny, and not quite two years old, yet her efforts are actually beginning to make a difference around here. I’m actually feeling guilty for not giving her an allowance.

You can’t wipe down a table or dust anything without giving her a rag to assist with the job. She’s been helping TR empty the dishwasher for some time now, and manages all the silverware on her own (not yet sorted correctly, but give her time.) She follows along behind us picking up odds and ends, will take care of her own spills, and even climbs up and scoops out cat food and pours it into the dish. Well, she pours it mostly into the dish.

She’s self cleaning as well, taking over the washcloth at bath time, rubbing down with a towel afterwards, and insisting you hang it up on the rack for her (she can’t quite reach it herself.) She gets out a clean diaper and a wipe for you at changing time, and pulls clothes out of the drawers and puts them on. For the most part the outfits match too; more likely because she remembers wearing certain items together in the past. She’s more than mastered the shoe change, and is tackling socks as well.

This afternoon she was helping out as I picked up a few things in our room, and emptied the wastebaskets. I tied up the bag and said “Here’s the trash.” She grabbed it and walked out of the room a minute ahead of me.

In the living room, the boys asked me if I’d just heard the downstairs door to the garage open. I noticed the little one was missing at the same time. I started for the downstairs immediately, but about that time heard the door close, and saw RM coming back up. After so many times watching her brothers, she knew what to do with a bag of trash. She carried it all the way down and put it in the garage.

Some tell me it’s just a toddler thing, and I should enjoy it now because it won’t last. But I hope it will. Oh how much I hope it will.
