Not Only a Mom

Words from a whole person.

Holidays Rolling Along

Only one little project is left, and providing I don’t completely flake off it should be no problem to have it ready by Christmas morning. Everything else is done, completely done, and in some cases already delivered. There are pictures in the camera waiting for loading and editing and the motivation to do that loading and editing.

The Holidays are a bit drawn out here, not celebrated in a religious sense but more of a secular one. Faith to us is about how you live your every day life, not about how any one day is observed. So this time of year is enjoyed in the way of family traditions. We feed the wild creatures on Solstice night, watch the sunrise as longest night ends, visit family in the days leading up to Christmas Day, celebrate the changing of the calendar on New Year’s eve, and generally make note of all that is good and warm and bright about the time of year.

RM threw a bit of a wrench in some things this year. She has fallen in to some very not-so-good sleep patterns, and consequently made longest night into a truly longest night, keeping all of us awake until nearly sunrise but leaving me too exhausted to watch the new day begin. I think I actually finished one of the quilts as the wheel of the seasons ticked into the beginning of winter though.

Then the winter storm that blew through the first official day of the season dragged our day with my Mom into an overnight as we hesitated to drive our old and limping car home in the worst of the falling and blowing snow. So we feasted on leftovers, kept calling my brothers as they made their slow way to the safety of their own homes, camped out in Mom’s living room, and made a memory we will talk about for years.

Now the same limping car leaves me with the desire to hang out warm and safe at home for a few days. The kids have new things in hand and a couple more new things coming to keep them entertained. There are plenty of chores and projects and diversions to keep us all occupied for a bit. I think more than anything though, I’m ready for a return to a sense of routine and some ordinary days.
