Little Cat Feet

Fog

The fog comes
on little cat feet

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on

-Carl Sandburg

It’s a grey day here, rainy and snowy but not exactly fog. And sitting pretty much in the center of the Midwest there isn’t a harbor in sight either.

But reading this post at KitKatKnit, that poem was quick to come to mind. I found this funny little contest after following a link from Hither and Yarn. The kids were looking over my shoulder at the time; so of course I had no choice but to help them chase down cats and start measuring their “bunny thumpers.”

This one is Merlin, our little short legged man. He measured a mere 4.5 inches; very dainty just like his girlish meow.

Next up in size is Poco, of the miracle cat fame. She’s still going strong and nearing 19 years old now, and fortunately no repeat of her wandering adventure. She was a surprising 5 inches; surprising as she’s not a large cat at all, but apparently graceful and long legged. She is also grumpiest, as you see the full claw extension here.

Not surprising at all is that our big guy Smudge had the longest measurement at pretty close to 5.5 inches (he was curling his toes.) He’s a great big snuggly monster of a tuxedo cat who uses that height and length to reach in and play in the toilet at every opportunity.

So there you have it, our contribution of Bunny Thumpers. Thanks for the entertaining contest!

  1. That’s one of my favorite poems, too.

Our cat is sleeping on our bed, under the covers, or I’d measure him. :)

  2. Wow, what nice, patient cats you have! I’m afraid we would be nursing some wounds if we tried this at home. :)
