It Finally Caught Me

Friday, February 15th, 2008

We’ve had a remarkably illness free winter this go around. It’s a little funny to say that, considering SW did have a two-ER-visit round of asthma-triggering virus a little while back. But that was his only illness of the season. TR had one mild cold, V has had nothing. So many people I know have had months long lingering coughs and multiple rounds of one thing or another spread from family member to family member. I’ve tried to keep quiet on the whole thing and not brag our good fortune.

For RM and myself though the healthy streak ran out this week. She’s had a cold and a cough and has been a bit flustered by the whole thing. This kid never gets sick; in her whole two plus years of life she’s only had one trip to the doc for more than a checkup and has never had an antibiotic or any other prescription. I don’t think she gets what’s going on with the runny nose and cough and discomfort and has been a little bewildered by it all. She keeps giving me that “Mom, do something” look.

We skipped a outing yesterday even though she was doing so much better, not wanting to share the germies. I’m really glad we did because my sneaking suspicion that I was coming down with it as well has proven true this morning. I have a sore throat and funky sinuses and the whole bit. My turn I guess.

But what truly isn’t fair about the whole thing is that when the kids are sick I let them rest. When V is sick he rests no matter what I try to do. When I’m sick they all expect business as usual - meals on the table, clean clothes in the closets and all the other thankless tasks delegated to me. Every Mom out there knows exactly what I’m talking about I’m sure.

So it’s off to swig down some Emergen-C and get on with the day I suppose.
