Knitting of a Different Sort

Just this morning I learned of a common supersition in Germany.  It seems that it is considered bad luck to wish someone Happy Birthday, or to celebrate someone’s birthday before the actual day.

There may be some merit that that!

Today SW turns 14 years old!  My little guy is growing up fast, and growing up big.  He stands a full three inches taller than me already, and seems even taller every day.  He’s come so very, very far in life too.  He is not just growing, but maturing and developing and making great strides every day to overcome a lot of challenges.

He’s had the opportunity to demonstrate some of that maturity this week.  We had an early birthday celebration with Grandma last Sunday - and here is where that bad luck comes in.  We had gone out for lunch, and SW was walking away from the table when he slipped on an oily spot on the floor and landed on his right arm.  Ouch.

On ER visit, two sets of X-rays, one MRI and four days later we finally got definite confirmation that he has a broken elbow, specifically a radius head fracture.  So he’s looking at 11 more days in a splint and then more X-rays to see how it’s healing.

He’s enduring all of this pretty well really.  He does feel that we should “cater to his every whim” to make up for all the inconvenience, but we don’t let him get away with that too much.  The patience he has shown with the hot, awkward splint on his arm, and the 45 minutes stuffed in an MRI machine is amazing.  He is quite a kid!  So here’s hoping his bone “knits” itself together quickly!

Happy Birthday kiddo!  Many even happier returns!
